Many months ago, a long time client and friend sent me a huge boxer dog statue asking me to paint it up colorfully. The only instructions I was given:
Do your thing
Noshopnk
Take your time
This is by far the biggest statue I've painted yet. For reference, here's the Intern next to it….
So I put the 18in tall statue in the studio, out of view of the Intern (or he would want to play with it) waiting for two things to happen. I needed to have a good chunk of time available to work on it, alone, so it wasn't exposed on the painting table to curious children. And I needed to have an idea of how I wanted it to look. This artistic vision for lack of a better word is not always how the end result looks. But it's a starting point. My paintings usually have what I like to call my Bob Ross moment. If you've ever watched Bob Ross, he always decides at some point in the middle of a beautiful landscape to add a barn or a fence, etc. Every time I watched as a kid I would stress out like, no! You're going to mess it up. Only to have him finish the piece and I would sigh in relief touche, Bob. You clearly knew what you were doing. Now when I paint, I always have a moment where I think I might have messed up or I suddenly pivot and see exactly what I need to do.
So finally after the holidays, and after sitting primed in a aqua blue for a good month, I “saw” the boxer I wanted to paint.
I wanted a look of a copper fawn boxer fading into rainbow with a senior sugar frost mask.
I would love to hear what you think of the end result. Also, if you're interested in me painting up a statue like this for you (even a non boxer dog) just reach out here, or through the contact page in our shop www.5149andahalfart.com

Beautiful, and so much boxer sweet, vulnerable expression on that face—makes you want to hug her!
She is gorgeous! Well done!!
