Sunday's Are For Reading
One of my resolutions for 2025 is I need to read more for enjoyment. At any given time, I have a stack of books on my nightstand or recently downloaded to my kindle. For the most part, they are books related to understanding autism, speech therapy, some art books related to technique and children's books I'm trying to introduce my son to. Although that's been difficult because he gets locked onto a book for months on end. Part of his gestalt language processing and scripting.
As part of my plan to do more self care, I wanted to make more of an effort to read for pleasure. So Sundays have been set aside to try and do that for at least an hour. Today I'm reading Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (and I'm loving it).
Management of course joins me, as technically, I'm on her couch. The “dog couch” is an old leather couch in the front of the house where she gets plenty of sunbathing in and plenty of people watching.
I love the look on her face. The last two days my inbox has been flooded with beautiful boxer faces as people place orders for our yearly custom painted Valentine's Day watercolor cards. Each smoosh face or sugar frosted mug is just jam packed with personality. I don't know any of these dogs in real life, but I want to.
I didn't start out a boxer dog breed person. I grew up with golden retrievers and probably would have just continued that tradition if I hadn't been renting a place that had a 25lb dog limit. The year was 2007. I was living with my boyfriend (now my husband who I affectionately call Corporate) and I desperately wanted a dog in our house. I knew goldens were out so I asked Corporate what kind of dog he wanted. He never had a dog growing up but he said he always liked boxers. I didn't know what a boxer even looked like. I had to look it up on the internet. But it was love at first sight. After reading how they were clowns, very playful, very loving and loyal. And seeing hundreds of jowely faces with underbites and tilted heads, how could I possibly get any other breed?!
Those of you that have boxers are probably saying at this point, ‘wait a minute, boxers are over 25lbs though…’
And you would be correct :) The short version of the story is I found a boxer puppy. I got it despite the fact it would be over 25lbs. And that move forced us to find a new home (see how I didn't just keep the dog a little bit and then surrender it like some of those jackass posts you see). Boyfriend/future husband was pissed. But I was now officially a boxer person.
We bought a house (perfect timing because you know how the 2008 housing market went). I had my to first boxer and the rest is history.
Now I have to get back to those custom watercolor Valentine's Day cards. You can order in the shop www.5149andahalfart.com or message via our social but do it asap. Spots are filling it way faster than previous years.
