Keaton's Discoveries
Cookies!
Keaton’s Discoveries is our new column written by three year old rescue boxer, Keaton, who is navigating life now as an indoor dog. She has gotten several care packages from people that follow our page. One however was a very large box, filled with baked goods for her. All the way from New York!
Okay, so a box arrived today—cardboard, very official-looking, the whole nine yards—and my human opened it and inside were these... cookies? For ME? From someone I don’t even KNOW? I’m sorry, but that’s suspicious. That’s wonderful but also deeply suspicious. Who just sends cookies to a dog they’ve never met? Is this normal? My human seems thrilled, keeps saying things like “look how fancy!” and “these are gourmet!” which I don’t understand but I’m picking up on the enthusiasm. The cookies smell like peanut butter and banana and maybe a hint of something called “organic oat flour,” and oh my GOD, I need one immediately but also what if they’re too special to eat? Do I even deserve COOKIES when I still pee in the house sometimes?
My human showed me one. It was so PRETTY! She gave it to me. Just held it out in her hand right in front of me like I’d done something extraordinary just by existing! And I took the tiniest, most delicate nibble because these are ARTISANAL, apparently, and you don’t just wolf down artisanal cookies like some kind of barbarian! Except then the taste hit me and all bets were off. It’s crunchy! It’s delicious! It’s everything I didn’t know I was missing during those three years of kibble-if-I-was-lucky! I may have done a little tap dance. I may have peed a little. I’m not admitting to anything.
But here’s the thing that’s really getting me…some stranger, someone who’s never even seen me do my signature move where I tilt my head when confused, cared enough to send ME cookies. Special ones! In a box! With my name on it! The world is so much bigger and kinder than I ever knew from that backyard, and sometimes it sends you homemade treats just because, and honestly? I’m verklempt. Pass me another cookie.
Pete! I need to tell Pete about this.
Love you already,
Keaton
I’ve decided to keep things free here on Substack for the time being. If you enjoy a post, and want to support me and my ability to continue to stay at home with my son, I've added a Buy Me a Coffee option for anyone who wants to support this work. Zero obligation—I'm just glad you're here reading.
Keep an eye out for our next project, Boxer Soul, which I’ll be sharing very soon.
