When people find out my son is autistic, two things pretty much happen. And this applies only to parents of neuro-typical kiddos (with other special needs parents you just tend to get a sigh of relief, like being in a foreign country, not knowing the language and running into someone that speaks English).

But parents of neuro-typical kiddos will first give you some kind of weird consolation comment. Something usually along the lines of: he looks totally normal, I wouldn’t have even noticed, I’m sure it’s only a little autism. The books I read and parent support groups I’m in say these comments should bother me, but I think overall people mean well. They are stupid comments, don’t get me wrong. But can I blame them?
